"After careful review, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Kmart store in Yorktown Heights," said company spokesman Larry Costello. "The liquidation sale is expected to begin in mid-September and the store is planned to close by mid-December. We encourage customers to continue shopping on Kmart.com for all their product needs."
Although Costello did not say how many employees would lose their jobs, a WARN notice to the state said that 41 people would begin being laid off beginning Nov. 27 and continue for two weeks.
The plaza also includes the empty Food Emporium building, which has been closed for several years.
Town officials have worked to bring a new tenant to fill the space, but so far have not been able to secure any interested companies.
